A manufacturing organisation based locally who employ 33 people in a variety of roles from pickers and packers to administration. Family owned and with many employees being friends who have been with the organisation for a number of years.
The organisation were taken to tribunal for a race discrimination claim, which while settled before court, highlighted to the owners that a change was needed in dealing with diversity amongst the workforce.
Invited in by the owners, ABHR conducted a confidential questionnaire amongst all
33 employees about a number of diversity issues. Ie: What they considered was meant
by the term diversity? Whether they felt there was a problem? Did the managers
promote diversity? Etc.
The outcome of this questionnaire plus verbal feedback from a number of randomly
selected employees was that very little was known about diversity, what it meant,
how it could be beneficial to the organisation. It also threw up areas of concern
surrounding the managers lack of employment legislation or equal opportunities knowledge.
